February 2015 Let's Have Cake

I'm excited to be the Queen Bee again. For my month I'd like to make a quilt full of yummy cakes using this free pattern by Ellison Lane.  Here are a couple of inspiration fabrics that have the colors that I'm going for: red, pink, yellow, chartreuse, aqua and orange. For the background of the cakes please use Kona White (not text as in the photo of Elizabeth's block above.) 

 These Riley Blake fabrics are just to show colors,not for you to have to go buy or anything. In fact, the white background and large design wouldn't work that great for the cake layers. I'm wanting them to look more "one flavor" when viewed from a distance, if that makes sense. 

When you decide on a cake "flavor" you might want to post it to the February topic on our Flickr site so that there will be a variety of cake colors. Thanks so much ladies....I hope that you enjoy baking  sewing this month's block!

Happy 2015!

Happy 2015 to my MCM Bee buddies (and to followers of our blog)!!!  I hope everyone's new year is off to a wonderful start.  My goal this year is to be a more consistent blog publisher and reader.  I must admit I tend to forget we have our own blog and have neglected to post here.

Since our family had a photo shoot over the holidays which included my spiderweb bee quilt, I thought it an appropriate time to post it here.  I did post about my bee quilt over on my blog here in case you missed it.

I can't tell you how much I love my quilt!!!  Well maybe the fact that I took it with me on Christmas vacation gives you an indication ;-)))  I have not been able to get a photograph that shows the true beauty of this quilt.  Even these photos taken by a professional photographer do not do the quilt justice.  Maybe I will bring the quilt with me to QuiltCon to show those of you who are going!

Dresden Plate Block for Rene

Dresden Plate block for Rene

This was a fun block to make--I've never made one!  And it was also fun to work on pool/summer colors while in the middle of December.  A nice change.  I followed the tutorial listed on the Flickr page, and it went together easily.  I was happy I had the Dresden Wedge ruler, as it was a snap to cut out with that.  My center was about 4 1/4" inches, and I used a teensy zig-zag with invisible MonoPoly thread in the top.  Thanks for the great tutorial and directions.

Revisiting Dresden

I couldn't believe when I saw Rene's choice for December, the Dresden block. I can only remember making this block once before - in my beginning quilting class nearly 30 years ago. Wow. So really, I couldn't resist jumping right in and working on the block. And it was really fun! Love your palette, Rene! {btw, my center is 4", machine-appliqued on with a blanket-stitch.}

With this block done and soon to be mailed, I'll be saying farewell to the Mid-Century Modern Bee. I'd love to stay connected though with all of you, and will definitely share my finished quilt from April (yikes!) - probably in 2015. I look forward to seeing future finishes by the rest of you too! Thanks for the fun sewing together...
