Stephanie's Gorgeous Gertie Blocks

Hi Everyone,

In April, I had asked everyone to make a Gorgeous Gertie block for me.  It was a paper pieced block, and the pattern was in the magazine Love Patchwork and Quilting.  The templates for piecing are free downloads found here

The color inspiration was to be from the quilt shown in this photo (not the block I'm using, but I love it!):

I asked for text fabric as the background fabric.

Folks were pretty gracious to make me some beautiful blocks.  I didn't realize until after I had asked folks to do this that there were over 100 pieces in the block!  Gulp!  THANK YOU to the group for being good sports and not whining!

I've received all the blocks and finally had time to lay them all out.
Are they spectacular, or what?!  I need to make mine now.  I thought I'd wait until I had received them all to see what color I'd need to make to fill in.  I have such a nice balance already, I think I could go lots of directions!  (I need a design wall!)

I'm trying to decide if this needs sashing.  I've thought about either a gray or a very dark purple sashing (like the dark purple in teh block that is the first one in the second row).  And I've thought about using the signature blocks as the cornerstones.  I've considered pieced sashing and pieced borders to coordinate with the blocks.

If you have suggestions or ideas, I'd be wide open to them.  Let me know what you think!

THANK YOU, EVERYONE, FOR LETTING ME BE QUEEN BEE!  I am having a lot of fun with this, and these blocks are so gorgeous.  I never could have accomplished this by myself!

  1. Stephanie--
Wow--these look so great all together! It's going to be a terrific quilt. I'm a terrible one for giving advice, but when I'm trying to decide on sashing, I usually lay the blocks down on the fabric I'm considering, spacing them as if they were sashed. Sometimes that helps.

I'd probably put the signature blocks on the back, as there is a LOT going on with all these pieced blocks, but that's just my .02. Thank you again for showing us all the blocks--so terrific!

    1. Thanks for the feedback and thoughts, Elizabeth! I appreciate it. I probably will lay it out and see what they look like with sashing. I am kind of liking the secondary design that's happening now...

  2. Wow they look so wonderful together. I'd definitely lay them on the sashing fabric first to see what it does to the design. Right now there is a nice flow from block to block that the sashing might interrupt.

    1. Anne, I agree. I think I am liking the flow, but I'm going to give the sashing a whirl just to make sure! Thanks!

  3. It's great seeing these all together. I'm a bit disappointed that my block kind of fades into the background. Feel free to put it on the back! I'd be interested in hearing from Nancy who commented on Flickr about an idea she had to bring out a secondary pattern.

    1. I don't think it fades into the background! I think it looks good. I like it. Remember, I still have another block to make. Yeah, I can't wait to see what Doris (I think that's who you are referring to) comes up with. I'll play around with it a little!
